#GRWM Brain Injury Alliance of Arizona Rays of Hope Speaking Engagement (With Video)

On May 17th, 2018 I had the pleasure of speaking at the Brian Injury Alliance of Arizona’s Rays of Hope event. It’s a free annual event for survivors and caregivers affected by traumatic brain injury with speakers and sessions on a variety of subjects having to do with TBIs. This was my third event with BIAAZ; I got the opportunity to once again share about how I acquired my brain injury as well as my experience with the Unmasking Brain Injury project where I got to make a mask that represents living with a TBI.

This speaking engagement was special to me as it happened almost two years to the day of the accident that caused the TBI. I thought it would be cool to take a different spin with this post about the event by sharing all the green makeup and skincare products I used to create the natural beauty look I rocked for it.

Bam! A Scripture to Help Ease Anxiety

Yesterday was the 4th of July. After having a wonderful time visiting with my family, I ended up spending part of the evening in the bathroom with the water running crying and repeating this scripture to myself after someone set off fireworks in my parent’s neighborhood that literally sounded like a canon going off. I was hoping that the water was going to be loud enough to drown out both the boom of the fireworks & the sound of me crying so that my son wouldn’t hear me. Seeing the physical and emotional pain that I've endured in the recovery process from the accident has unfortunately negatively affected him as well...

BAM!

The last thing I heard as the car struck me at 48 mph before I woke up on the ground in a pool of blood in the worst pain that I have ever experienced was a loud bump, kind of like a cabinet door slamming closed. I now suffer from PTSD as a result of the accident. It’s better than it was initially, but I still have moments of anxiety & last night was definitely one of them.

I try to stay positive as much as possible, but I’d be doing the world a disservice if I didn’t share that I do also struggle at times. 2 Timothy 1:7 has given me a lot of comfort during this time of recovery when the anxiety takes over.

Speaking the Word over your life and in the midst of difficult situations not only helps to give you a sense of peace, but it also orders the Universe to line itself up in obedience to God's promises for us.

When the anxiety kicked in yesterday, I went into the bathroom, closed the door, turned on the water and tried to breathe deeply as I silently repeated this scripture to myself over and over again until I began to feel some relief.

I know from personal experience that it's not always easy to see, feel and believe God's Word when we are in the midst of struggles. There are very real physical, emotional and psychological implications to the anxiety and depression that we experience, but incorporating God's Word into your daily life can be one aspect of a plan to help address them.

Don't feel like you are failing if you seek help in the form of counseling. I praise God for being able to find a counselor who has been able to help me process through this traumatic experience. I highly recommend seeking counseling if you are experiencing anxiety or depression, there's absolutely no shame in it. At the end of this post I've included a list of resources where you can find assistance as well as a site with 15 Scriptures to Help Calm an Anxious Mind.

It may not always feel like it, but there is light at the end of the tunnel and it will get better. I pray that if you’re struggling with anxiety or depression, that you’re able to get the help & support that you need & that this scripture can be a comfort to you as well.

The Benefits of Red Raspberry Leaf Tincture for Women’s Health

Happy #WellnessWednesday! For my Golden Milk Latté today I made some super cute Red Raspberry Leaf Tincture Latté art. I mean, who doesn’t need a little humpday happiness??? =)

A tincture is made when  alcohol is used to extract the active ingredients in herbs and flowers. I enjoy making my own tinctures and using them to make delicious and beneficial drinks. This is also sometimes also known as making “bitters”, or simply an infused vodka.

You can see more about making herbal-infused cocktails here, including a recipe with how to use them! While I enjoy making tinctures, the one I used for my latté art today was store bought. (Check out Amazon or your local health food store to find ready-made tinctures.)

Red Raspberry leaf contains:

Because of all these vitamins and minerals, red raspberry leaf is amazingly beneficial for women’s health. It’s used to address anemia, can promote healthy connective tissue, serves as a uterine tonic, tones the uterus and pelvic muscles, helps alleviate cramps, is used to promote fertility and eases morning sickness and nausea during pregnancy. It also helps prepare the uterus for birth. Last year (2017) my primary resolution was to be able to take a compliment (without saying anything negative about myself in response). Honestly, this was hard for me to do, but an important practice to implement.

Below is a chart of the most popular resolutions for 2017. This year I did one of my favorite ways of setting goals for the new year, and that is making a More/Less list. It's simply a list of things I want to do more of to replace not-so-positive habits.

We're five months into the year, how are your resolutions going? One of my favorite quotes is "every second is a chance to turn your life around," so keep in mind, each day is an opportunity to start over again. Every day your have the opportunity to get a little closer to being the person you want to be, living the life you want to live. Living Water & Water for Life

Today's post has a simple, but often neglected theme...water!

John 4:14 states, "But whoever drinks from the water that I will give him will never get thirsty again—ever! In fact, the water I will give him will become a well of water springing up within him for eternal life.” (HCSB)

Jesus is the living water we are blessed to have springing up from within ourselves for eternal life, but we also need to remember to pursue having enough physical water as well.

While there is no universally accepted amount of water that's suggested to consume, it's safe to say that most of us probably aren't drinking enough, and the consequences can be severe. Read on below for more info about water...

  1. Our cells and organs need water to function properly. Our joints are lubricated by it. It also regulates body temperature, and assists the passage of food through our intestines.

  2. We do acquire some water from many of the foods we eat (about 20%), however most of the water we need has to come from actually drinking it.

  3. During day-to-day functioning, our bodies use up water, even just by breathing! Therefore, water needs to be replaced on a consistent basis.

  4. Water is vital to our kidneys, it helps dissolve minerals and nutrients so that they are more accessible to our bodies and help transport waste out. 

  5. When the kidneys are not functioning properly because of a lack of water, waste products and excess fluid can build up in the body leading to serious problems including kidney failure, kidney stones, and Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs). Some severe kidney infections can even lead to death.

  6. Chronic kidney failure can include anemia, damage to the central nervous system, heart failure, and a compromised immune system.

  7. Dehydration is another issue that comes with a lack of water and can also result in kidney failure.

Here's a list from Medical News Today about the other negative effects dehydration can have on your body:

  • Blood is more than 90 percent water, therefore, if water is in short supply, blood can become thicker and increase blood pressure.

  • When dehydrated, airways are restricted by the body in an effort to minimize water loss, potentially making asthma and allergies worse.

  • The skin can become more vulnerable to skin disorders and premature wrinkling.

  • The bowel needs water to function correctly. If dehydrated, digestive problems and constipation can become an issue. Dehydration can lead to an overly acidic stomach which makes heartburn more common and can encourage the development of stomach ulcers.

  • Cartilage, found in joints and the disks of the spine, contain around 80 percent water. If dehydration is ongoing, joints can become less good at shock absorption, which leads to joint pain.

  • Dehydration can affect brain structure and function. If dehydration is prolonged, cognitive ability is impaired.

In summation, water is necessary for our bodies to function properly. Drinking other fluids doesn't do the trick because since they contain other things in them, they require more filtration by the body and won't function or be processed in your system the same way plain water will.

So how much water is enough? The amount of water a person needs to drink per day varies depending on several factors including how active they are and how much they sweat. The Institute of Medicine recommends that men drink around 13 cups (3 liters) a day and women should consume around 9 cups (2.2) liters a day. To put that into perspective, that's about 3 soda liter bottles of water a day (slightly less for the ladies.) One way to help make sure you're drinking enough is to give yourself deadlines throughout the day with the amount of water you need to drink. For instance, you could say, "I will have drunk ----- cups of water by 10:00 a.m."

Drinking water can also help with calorie control because it can make you feel fuller.

Water is mentioned numerous times in the Bible. Here's a list of 107 scriptures where water is mentioned in the Bible. 

Most of us are blessed to have access to clean water where even in our own country, many don't. So let's take advantage of the blessing of having clean water and make sure we're drinking enough of it!

The Science of Smudging: The Ancient Art of Burning Medicinal Herbs for Air Purification-UPDATED 3/5/20

 #DIDYouKnow that burning medicinal herbs such as sage for one hour in a closed room actually kills 94% of aerial bacteria AND can be maintained for up to 24 hours?

My wellness mama (Wisteria, founder & creator of Needful Things Natural Home & Bodycare) first introduced me to the practice of “smudging.”

The Journal of Ethnopharmacology published a scientific paper which states that with “...using medicinal smoke it is possible to completely eliminate diverse plant and human pathogenic bacteria of the air within confined space.”

UPDATE: Another scientific paper, also published in The Journal of Ethnopharmacology, explores the topic of the efficacy of using smoke as a traditional healing method. It discusses that, “In traditional healing, the burning of selected indigenous medicinal plants and the inhalation of the liberated smoke are widely accepted and a practiced route of administration.” The researchers were able to conclude that, “results suggest that the combustion process produces an 'extract' with superior antimicrobial activity and provides in vitro evidence for inhalation of medicinal smoke as an efficient mode of administration in traditional healing.”

Incense is mentioned 194 times in the Bible. It’s so cool that God has given us everything we need here on Earth to care for ourselves; ancient healing wisdom frequently leads the way.

Besides burning sage, which also has medicinal properties, one of my favorite kinds of incense is Fred Soll’s Ancient Blend Frankincense and Myrrh.

I've always thought of autumn as a second spring, an opportunity to restart and realign before the winter months approach. One way to make sure the last part of the year stays on a good note is to make daily affirmations a part of your mindfulness and self care routine. This post includes seven autumn-inspired affirmations to help you make the most of the changing seasons.

10 Mindful Eating Practices for Portion Control & A Better Relationship with Food

In America, our food mentality tends to be "bigger is better." However, bigger portions do not necessarily equal better nutritional value. "Supersizing" our portions leads to "Supersizing" our bodies, especially when filling up on empty calories from processed and fattening foods. Below, I've outlined ten easy mindful eating practices to help you maintain a healthy relationship with food, as well as help control your food intake to only eat until your body is nutritionally satisfied.

10 Ways to Practice Mindful Eating

  1. Ask yourself if you're really hungry, or just bored; or if you're eating just because the food is there, not because your body actually needs it.

  2. Pay attention to the real signs of hunger: stomach growling, low energy, etc. Also, listen to your cravings. Your body is asking you for the nutrients it needs. For instance, a banana craving could mean that your body needs more potassium. 

  3. Eat slower. Your brain will have time to catch up with your body and know when you're full and that it's time to stop eating.

  4. Chew more. Chewing your food more not only slows you down while eating (see #2) but also aids in digestion by helping to more thoroughly break down your food before it enters the rest of your digestive system.

  5. Don't let your diet be lead by your emotions. Avoid turning to food when you're stressed, sad or otherwise experiencing emotional upheaval.

  6. Drink water. It helps to fill you up, flush your system, and to know if you're truly hungry and need to eat or are possibly just dehydrated. If you're still feeling hungry after you drink the water, it may be time to eat.

  7. Plan your eating. You are less likely to make a bad food choice if when and what you eat are pre-planned; that includes planning healthy snacks. This can be hard to do with busy and varied schedules, but I believe God will give us the time we need to do things right for our bodies. And, if you plan to eat before you are at the point of being ravenous, you'll be less likely to overeat.

  8. Eat sitting down at the table with an actual plate. You are more likely to overeat if you eat standing up and/or out of containers as opposed to sitting down with an actual plate and utensils.

  9. Eat for nutritional satisfaction. If your diet consists of healthy, whole foods that satisfy you nutritionally, you'll get full faster and only eat until your body gets what it needs. Filling up on processed and junk foods gives you empty calories that don't sustain energy or good health, as well as lead to other negative health issues. This is also what balances out the cost of eating healthier: when you only eat until you are satisfied nutritionally, you will most likely end up eating less.

  10. Don't eat and multitask. This can also be a hard one, but think about movie popcorn. You're eating while watching the movie and before you know it, you've eaten an entire humongous bucket of popcorn all by yourself! If you are not distracted (by work, driving, the T.V., your phone, etc.) while eating, you will be much more aware of how much you are eating and when you are satisfied and it's time to stop.

  11. BONUS TIP: Engage your other senses. At my mindful eating demos, one activity I like to do is a mindful eating practice with a single raisin. I have participants look at the raisin, feel it in their hand, and even smell it. One common observation from participants after smelling the raisin is that they can smell how sweet it is. Noticing how strong the natural sugar is in the raisin by smelling it, rather than just shoving a bunch in your mouth at one time, helps your body to recognize how much is enough. The same goes for other foods, when you engage your other senses while eating, not only do you gain a greater appreciation for what you're eating, but your brain and body can work together intuitively to decide if and how much of the food you actually need.

12 Beautiful Quotes About Fall

Autumn, it's definitely my favorite time of year. This is my first year enjoying it in Arizona, and I have to say it's pretty different than experiencing it in Alaska or Oregon. As I mentioned in my post for my Pumpkin Spice Superfood Smoothie recipe, autumn in Arizona is kind of a relative term given that there's not really any leaves to turn colors and temps are still in the 90's.

But that doesn't mean that I can't get into the Fall spirit. The changing over from Summer to Fall mirrors the change in seasons I've recently experienced in my life due to the accident. I'm still recovering from the injuries I sustained and to say that my life is different now as a result of the accident would be an understatement. But just as the new season approaches, I'm learning to work with the things that are out of my control right now, and doing my best to prepare for what's ahead by learning what I can from the season that I'm currently in.

5-Minute Shower Meditation

Meditation and mindfulness do not have to be complicated, or even extremely formal. In order to make it a regular practice, finding easy ways to incorporate it into your daily schedule is extremely beneficial. You have to shower anyway, so why not use it as an opportunity to bring some peace and calm into your day? Read on below for my simple 5-minute shower meditation.

  1. Begin by taking some deep breaths, completely filling your tummy up with air. You can place a hand on your stomach for a few breaths to really feel the sensation of a full breath, bringing your awareness to it.

  2. Clear your mind of any thoughts; but it's totally okay if one ends up sliding in. If a thought tries to take your attention, notice it with interest, then allow the water to wash it away; from your head, down your body, and then out and down the drain. 

  3. Allow the water to carry away any feelings of guilt, sadness or anxiety as you continue to breathe deeply in the shower, enjoying feelings of peace and relaxation.

  4. When you're ready to bring your shower meditation to a close, set an intention and fully bring your focus to that intention for several breaths before bringing your awareness back into the present moment.

Coming from a family of creative individuals, art has always been a part of my life in one form or another. After a traumatic experience as a child, art became not only a form of self-expression, but also a form of therapy & even of communication as I strove to make sense of the world around me. On May 19th while leaving an event at the PHX Science Museum I was struck by a car traveling 45 miles per hour while walking in a pedestrian crosswalk. I was thrown 15 feet in the air & 100 feet forward. Although my injuries were extensive & my recovery is ongoing, I’m blessed to still be alive & know that God truly has a purpose for my life. 

Until very recently, due to the severity of my vestibular injuries, I have been unable to create art. To have lost my ability to express myself in that way was devastating; especially during this difficult & uncertain time of healing. Art has always been an outlet of expression for me as far back as I can remember, & to have that taken away as a result of the accident was emotionally challenging.

I’ve now been cleared to begin creating art again on a limited basis, & the accident has had a profound influence on my style as an artist. Before the accident, one thing that made me stand apart from other artists is that I did not have a finite, consistent style in my drawings & paintings. Even within the same medium, my art varied so much from piece to piece that it was not obvious that the same artist created them.  

I do still believe that the variance in my art style provides for visual interest and allows for the evolutionary process to be at the forefront of my development as an artist and individual. That being said, since the accident, I have specifically been exploring the style of continuous line drawing. I perceive a direct parallel between continuous line drawing & the process of life itself.

With continuous line drawing, a single, unbroken line is used to create the piece. You at times have to stop & look at where you’ve been in the piece, to see where you are going. You never lift your pen or brush to stop & change what you are creating; meaning that it might not end up the way you wanted or originally envisioned, but you keep going & it ends up being something beautiful. Life, too is a continuous journey. You sometimes need to stop & look at where you’ve been to see where you are going. And although your path may not end up the way you envisioned, if you persevere & keep going, it will end up being something beautiful. 

Now that I am cleared to begin creating art again on a limited basis, I'm excited to further explore & cultivate my career & expression as an artist. By using art to be connected to & serve the community, I will be able to not only use it to help heal myself, but to help others heal & peel back the layers to discover their own true essence.

Looking Forward to the Future, part 1

Due to the accident, I'm not able to teach yoga or do my wellness events or make videos. Being transparent, that has been extremely difficult for me. But, I'm using this time for planning to help with the discouragement. I get excited when I think of how God is reassuring me that no matter how bad this time period is, a day will come that I will be able to continue my path as a wellness professional.

It's definitely hard at times to keep the faith, but I know God is healing me and that I'll be able to use this experience to help and encourage others to achieve their healing as well. What are you looking forward to about your future?

Down, but not Defeated

I debated how and when, if at all, to post about this. But as you know, my most fervent passion in life is to help others achieve holistic health and wellness (mind, body, spirit,) and I hope to inspire others through this traumatic experience. On the evening of May 19th, after attending an event at the Phoenix Science Museum with a friend, I was struck by a car while in the crosswalk on the way to my car. The driver struck me at 48mph, I was thrown 15 feet in the air and 100 feet forward. I sustained several injuries, but I am praising God that there could have been a very different outcome. I am on the road to recovery, and appreciate the prayers and support of my family, friends, network and acquaintances as this trauma transforms into my testimony and another tool to help and inspire others. Please know that every second you're alive is a chance to turn your life around and nothing is impossible with God. Pursue your passions and your heart's desires as if your very life depends upon it. Spread love, light and kindness wherever you can and realize that many of the negative things that crop up are not worth reacting or holding on to. Please continue to keep me and my family in your prayers.

Note: This post previously said that I was struck at 45mph which is what I thought I was told immediately afterwards while in the hospital after being hit. However, after my family spoke with the officer who spoke with both the driver and witnesses at the scene, it was determined that the driver was actually traveling 48mph.

Benefits of Yoga for Men at the Arizona Men's Health+Wellness Expo

#DIDyouKnow that many of your favorite sports teams and athletes do yoga? From Ray Lewis (football) and LeBron James (basketball) to Evan Longoria (baseball) and the New Zealand All Blacks (rugby), more and more men are realizing the benefits of this diverse practice. From military deployments to the boardroom, more and more men are taking to heart (literally!) the advantages yoga can provide.

This weekend I had the privilege of being a part of the Arizona Men's Health+Wellness Expo where I got to share about the benefits of yoga for men and did a little chair yoga at the breakout session in addition to demo'ing my Community Hip Hop Yoga. 3 Ways to Take a Timeout

I may have been one of only a handful of children in the entirety of mankind's history that loved being put in timeout. I didn't get them often, but I referred to it as my "Imagination Time". I'd sit by myself and sing songs and make up stories, thoroughly enjoying my alone time. It's funny that things we saw as punishment as children we now miss and welcome as adults, (uhhh, hello nap time!) Read below for three simple five minute options to take a timeout during your busy day.

1. Meditate

There is definitely something to be said about intentionally quieting the mind to de-stress and give yourself an opportunity to restart your thinking and emotions. You can't always control the stress or emotions that come throughout your day, but you can choose to not allow them to steal your joy or your peace. Your meditation doesn't have to be long or complicated. It can be done at your desk or out in your garden. Close your eyes and free your mind from any thoughts. Breathe deeply and intentionally, allowing each inhalation to fill your mind, body and spirit with feelings of peace and calm.  

You can repeat a mantra silently or out loud to yourself to help readjust your mindset. I like to rephrase short, encouraging scriptures for my meditation time. For example, Isaiah 26:3 (NIV) which states,  "You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you." I make it personal by rephrasing it to say, "You keep me in perfect peace because I trust in You."  Find scriptures or encouraging phrases that resonate with you and your current situation, or just focus on achieving the silence and calm of a mind free from any thoughts.

2. Get Creative

You don't have to believe you're artistic take a timeout to create. It can be as simple as a little doodle on a scrap piece of paper or as elaborate as trying a new recipe or building a piece of furniture (you probably won't get that done in one five-minute sitting, but you can in five-minute sessions over time!) As a single mom and business owner with an outside part-time job, I feel like so much of my day and energy is spent on things that I have to do; spending even five minutes creating something I want to do does a lot for letting me not feel like a prisoner to my schedule. I've recently taken up the very old fashioned hobby of embroidery. Etsy has some really great kits available with everything you need to complete the design. I'm currently doing the adorable Sea Captain one pictured above created by CozyBlue (link in photo caption.)

3. Get Physical

According to an article published by the U.S. National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health: 

"Aerobic exercises, including jogging, swimming, cycling, walking, gardening, and dancing, have been proved to reduce anxiety and depression." 

Taking five minutes to get your body moving is an amazing way to take a timeout. (Added bonus if it's outside in nature...) Obviously yoga is my favorite (I may be a little biased!), but putting on your favorite jam and shakin it like a Polaroid picture does wonders for your mood! In my personal experience, the cheesier the song, the better your mood is improved. I'm not a fan of a lot of cuss words in songs, so all my songs are the edited versions...Check out some of my current faves that I love to "shake it off" to:

Budget+Earth Friendly Kids' Parties!

Yep. You're a hip, conscious mama...

But the thought of throwing a sustainable, eco-friendly kids birthday party that won't break the budget may have you quaking in your vegan leather boots. But it doesn't have to! I'm going to share some tips with you for throwing your precious little one a fun, Earth-friendly party your guests won't soon forget!

Step 1: Invitations

This is the first step in choosing sustainability for your party...and you have options! You can get creative and print your own using recycled paper. In the past I've also used a picture of my little guy with the party info printed on the back (still made by myself on my home printer, which equals...cheaper) that gave guests a keepsake which could be framed and kept rather than thrown away after the party. Etsy and other sources also have some cute options for plantable invitations that are great for another sustainable option. Try to use seeds that are non-invasive and are native to your area. The invitations are also your opportunity to ask your guests to let you know about any allergies or food restrictions they may have. It's also your first chance to let them know that this is going to be an eco-friendly party. Which leads me to the next step: PRESENTS!

Step 2: Presents

On your invitation, don't be shy about outlining specific requests for gifts and presents. Requesting clothes, experiences (i.e. movie tickets, tickets to a theme park, etc.) or gift cards are all good gift options because they are far less likely to be thrown away and are much more likely to be used. Books are also a great gift option because they are good for their growing minds, thoughtfully chosen and can also be passed on later down the line. It's also a good idea to request that any gifts be wrapped either in reusable bags or fabric that can be reused. All that being said, make sure there are some fun gifts (read:toys!!!) because kids do obviously enjoy toys-they can come from sustainable sources if you really wanna go that deep with it-and after all, it is about them having a good time on their special day!

Step 3: fOoD!

One thing that guests always look forward to is of course the food. At least I know I do! You obviously want to try to stick to healthy options, but that doesn't mean that you have to sacrifice flavor! (Or fun!) One option that I did for my little man's party which was a huge hit was individual pizzas. It's an easy and budget-friendly way for everyone to get something they like that's in line with their individual food preferences and choices. Make sure you do have vegan, gluten-free and kosher options for your guests. This also doubles as a fun activity for the kids (and parents!) to partake in.

Although it takes some time to clean them when you're done, reusable plates and utensils are the most eco-friendly option to go with; but there are also lots of biodegradeable, recyclable single use options should you choose to go that route. Homemade popsicles for those summer parties are also a yummy and inexpensive option and watermelon or other fruits feed a lot of people and are totally synonymous with summertime fun!

Step 4: Activities

Here is another opportunity to really kick that eco-consciousness up a notch! One activity that was a major hit at our party was tie-dying shirts with natural vegetable dyes. A quick Google search will give you instructions on herbs, vegetables and flowers that can be boiled to make dye. The kiddos get a reusable keepsake and memories of a fun time being creative with their friends. The plant material that's left over from making the dye can be composted! #MommyForTheWin!

Other options for fun, sustainable activities that connect your guests with the nature around them include: A nature scavenger hunt, playing games at the park, making crafts they can keep and reuse (think: birdhouses or planting seeds/plants in recycled containers-they can even decorate them!)

Step 5: Gifts for Guests

There's no need to break the bank (or your sustainable aspirations) when creating gift bags for your guests. First decide on what you will use to give the gifts, one thing I have used before that was great is bandanas. They come in a million colors to coordinate with your party theme and can be purchased in bulk for super cheap from your local dollar store or even eBay, then reused by your guests!

The small, reusable shopping bags are also an option. As far as the actual gifts go, reusable and/or keepable is the name of the game. Bubbles are always a fun and enjoyable gift and can be refilled once they're empty. You know grown-ups love 'em too, it's okay to admit it, I won't tell...

Homemade fruit leather or natural candy are healthier options than your typical pinata grab bag candies. Seeds are also a fun and eco-friendly option or gift cards in a small amount...as parents we know and apprecite that every bit counts! And finally...

Step 6: Just Do Your Best!

Seriously, don't take it too seriously! Don't drive yourself (and your guests) crazy with trying to make every.single.aspect of your party eco-friendly and sustainable. Just do the best you can and remember it's about celebrating the life of your amazing little one, so the most important thing is to just have fun! Every small choice makes a big impact and any one of the things you choose to do to make your party more sustainable will make a difference!

#BlackJoy Self Care Saturday

This weekend I had the privilege of being involved in Black Lives Matter Portland's #BlackJoy #SelfCareSaturday for black girls, women and femmes. I lead the yoga session that kicked the event off Saturday morning. It was a beautiful and safe space for us to do something many of us struggle with, making time for self care.

Now let's talk about how amazing this event was! After kicking it off with my FlyGirlFlow yoga session, I took part in the pilates session.

And of course being the fun chicks that we are, we had to bring the silliness to the photo station as well...

There were workshops like Urban Headwrapping and African jewelry-making, and things for kids to do too. My son had a good time being in the environment and communing with some other young black boys who also came with their family members. He even made a super-cool collage that he gave to me. Creativity definitely runs in the family.

All in all it was a great and much-needed event. So great in fact that another one is planned for December 20th!

And if one reminder was made very clear at this event, it's the message on the sign that me and Zay are holding in this last picture. Black joy does matter, and whether that's watching YouTube hair tutorials, doing yoga, taking a walk in nature or yourself out on a date, self care is vital to that process. Black joy. It's real and it's attainable. Get you some.
